You will need a provisional driving licence before you can start lessons. These cost £34 when you apply online at the official UK Government site. Make sure you can read a standard number plate from 20 meters before you apply, use glasses or contact lenes if needed. Click here to apply.
Always purchase and read the latest version of the highway code (£4.99) before your first driving lesson. Some on-line retailers offer free delivery, or collect in your local bookshop. I carry extra copies of this book, so you can buy one at anytime.
I don't recommend doing the theory test before your first lesson, check that you actually like driving before paying for the test first.
I will give you some help and tips for your theory test during your lessons, as well as free access to a very good on-line app, then you can book it after a few weeks of me helping you.
The current theory test fee is £23, to avoid additional fees, make sure you book through the official government site by clicking here
You cannot book the practical test until you have passed the theory test. The theory test is valid for two years. The current wait times for a practical test is around 4-5 months. This costs £62.
Before your first lesson you will need to generate a code so that I can look at your licence online to make sure that it is still valid and that there aren't any restrictions on your licence.
There is no charge for this and the code is valid for 21 days. Do this by clicking here.
Please send this to me before the day of your lesson.
You will need to bring your provisional licence with you on your first lesson, you don't need it for your other lessons but it is a good idea to have it with you whenever you are driving
Your first lesson will often be in the evening when the roads are quieter. You will be picked up and taken to a quiet location to start your lesson. I will ask you about your driving history,
why you want to learn and what you are expecting during this time, you are welcome to ask any questions as well. You will be given a tour of the car controls and in depth talk through of how to drive before you get to try it yourself.
You will be shown how to adjust the seat so that it is comfortable and in the correct position to reach all of the controls. Then set the mirrors up, strap yourself in and you are ready to go.
You will then be taught how to pull away and more importantly, how to stop. You will then be driven home.
For more details on what you will learn in your first lesson, please click here.
You are welcome to bring a chaperone if you wish. This could be a parent, carer or friend. They must not interfere with the lesson or distract you in any way.
On the day of your test I will collect you around an hour before your test, so that you can have a drive and settle any nerves and get used to the car again. You must bring your driving
licence with you on this day, or you will not be allowed to take your test. Allow an hour for the test, but
it is normally around 40-45 minutes long, then half an hour for a chat and return home. There is no additional charge for taking the test, so it is just the 2½ hours use of the car to pay for.
